All-Ireland Open Youth Champion 2012

In his quest to retain his All-Ireland Open Youths title, Ryan Dervan of the Loughrea Boxing Club made an impressive start at the championships held at the National Stadium, Dublin. Last year Ryan secured his first national title at these championships boxing at the 69Kg Welter weight division but has had to move up to 75Kg Middle weight this year. His first opponent in the prelims on Saturday last was Ridwan Osomoko from the Bay City club in Dublin, Ryan won comfortably on a score of 24 - 3. In the quarter finals on Sunday he faced Tony Brown from the St Catherine's club. Ryan controlled the contest from the first bell and won on a score of 13 - 6. Ryan had to battle all the way to the final bell, in his semi-final clash with Pat Ward from the Gurteen club in Sligo. The computer score ended even at 5-5 with Ryan winning 28-22 on the computer countback. In the final, Ryan faced Geoffrey Kavanagh from the Corinthians club in Dublin. After another titanic battle, Ryan was declared champion on a score of 11-10. Ryan's coach in the corner was his dad Liam, himself a former double Connacht champion.
